A China Airlines passenger plane made an emergency landing Sunday at Chubu airport in central Japan due to a shortage of fuel.
According to the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry, the Boeing 737 from Taipei tried to land at Toyama airport three times but gave up due to unstable air currents.
As fuel ran short, the plane changed its destination from Toyama to Chubu and landed safely.
No injuries were reported among the 155 passengers and crew and the aircraft suffered no damage, but the ministry designated it as a serious incident and the Japan Transport Safety Board decided to dispatch two officials to investigate the case.
The China Airlines plane left Taipei around 9:10 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Toyama airport about two hours and 45 minutes later.
The pilot diverted to Chubu after failing to land at Toyama but declared an emergency at an altitude of about 4,500 meters due to fuel shortage. It landed at Chubu around at 1:10 p.m.
