Digital museum in Tokyo offers model for attracting global audience, says Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga visited the Mori Building Digital Art Museum in the Odaiba district of Tokyo’s Koto Ward on Monday.

“I believe beautiful images from the museum’s exhibits enable visitors to share passions beyond language,” he told reporters, adding that it is a strong model for developing new ways to attract more overseas visitors.

Offering something that they can enjoy taking part in and understand is important for elevating Japan’s tourism to a higher level, Suga added.

The chief cabinet secretary also stressed the government’s intention to reflect such factors in its efforts to make national parks and other public facilities more attractive as it works toward realizing its goal of increasing visitors to the country to 40 million in 2020.

Since it opened in June last year, the museum has attracted roughly 2.3 million visitors from over 160 countries and regions, setting a record for the number of visitors at a single-artist museum in a year, according to teamLab, the exhibition’s organizer.

The museum says about half its visitors come from overseas and, according to a survey it conducted, for about half of them visiting the museum was the main reason for their trip to Tokyo.

U.S. first lady Melania Trump visited the museum in May together with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s wife, Akie.
