Caramel Chocolate Cookies: Worth the trip to Haneda Airport
The airport might not be the first place you think of when craving sweets. Yet all those souvenir stores dotting the concourse conceal some truly tasty treats. It might not be socially acceptable to tear in to a box of individually wrapped goods, but you can always save some for when you get to your destination.

'Koara no Machi Yaki': A cream-filled tribute to the well-known koala cookie
Attached to the Lotteria fast-food restaurant in Nakano's Sun Road shopping street is a special stall selling a special bear-shaped treat. They make a taiyaki variant shaped like Lotte's famous Koara no Machi ("Koala's March") cookie snack, called "Koara no Machi Yaki." The regular flavors on offer err on the side of traditional fillings — red bean past, custard cream — but they've also introduced a special autumn offering.

Bear's Sugar Shack: Bite-sized pancakes that melt in your mouth
Tokyo's love affair with pancakes appears to be waning and lines outside trendy stores for the decadent dessert have thinned significantly in 2017. Enter Bear's Sugar Shack in Shinjuku, which looks to buck this trend with one simple change: Instead of a offering a couple of regular-sized pancakes on a plate, Bear's Sugar Shack offers a box of miniature ones.

Mango Grapefruit Snowflakes Sherbet: Sweet, tart and perfect for summer
One of the most popular desserts to take off in Tokyo over the last two years has been shaved ice from outside Japan. Taiwanese baobing, via the chain Ice Monster, kick-started the trend, and a few others have appeared as of late. Korean chain Sulbing, which creates bingsu (Korea's take on the treat), has been one of the more notable arrivals over the past year, and has gotten so popular that they opened a new store in Sendai earlier this month.

Sakekasu Soft Ice Cream: A divine combination for the summer
Along with the resurgence of sake, it's no surprise that there has also been steady interest in amazake, the sweetened alcoholic beverage made from sakekasu, the lees of sake production, which is known for being nutritious as it contains vitamins, protein, organic acids, fiber and more. Although it's usually served hot, a sake brewer has found a way to enjoy amazake in frozen form — just in time for Japan's intolerably humid summer.
