Soetsu Yanagi and Old Tamba

With a history of more than 800 years of making pottery, Tamba in Hyogo Prefecture is recognized as one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan. One of the first to promote and extol the simplistic beauty of Tamba-ware was the art critic, philosopher and founder of the mingei (folk crafts) movement Soetsu Yanagi (1889-1961).

This comprehensive showcase of Tamba-ware charts different periods of the pottery style in Japanese history, shedding light on its variations of shape, color and texture.

On show are jars featuring natural ash glazes from the 13th century in addition to jars, pots, sake bottles and plates from the Edo Period (1603-1868). (Yukari Tanaka)
