The volcanic island of Izu Oshima may be considered a part of Tokyo, but with its tsubaki (camellias) gardens and scenic ocean views it's practically another world.
From early February, the island will hold various events to celebrate the blooming season of its famous camellias. They include a parade of mikoshi (portable shrines) and women dressed in traditional outfits on Jan. 27, and night festivals that will take place every weekend from Feb. 1 to March 17.
There will also be workshops at Motomachi Port where you can dye a handkerchief or a scarf with camellia petals. (Yuki Yamauchi)
