Cracking jokes is not as easy as seasoned comedians make it look. Doing it in a foreign language is even harder. Having only done comedy in English, Takashi Wakasugi seems to enjoy a challenge.

“I live in Australia, so that’s why my English is a little ... crikey,” says Wakasugi, 36, as he opens his set at Tokyo Comedy Bar.

The Melbourne-based comedian, who goes by “Waka” on stage, is stopping by the Shibuya club on his way home from a monthlong run of his “Comedy Samurai” show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It’s his first time back to Japan since moving to Australia in 2018, so he brings the crowd up to speed on his life — mostly skipping over milestones like performing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, appearing in its televised gala, and being cast in the Australian spinoff of the cult U.K. show “Taskmaster,” where comedians tackle absurd challenges, many of which are tailor-made for physical comedy.
