Masato Nakayama scored in the final seconds from the penalty spot, earning 10-man Jubilo a 1-1 draw at Gamba Osaka in the J. League first division on Sunday.

Kosuke Onose scored just before halftime for Gamba at Panasonic Stadium, but the hosts could not convert any of their other chances, and Nakayama was awarded a penalty when he lost his footing in the area after a nudge from a defender.

Jubilo went down to 10 men in less than a quarter of an hour after two yellow cards in quick succession for Brazilian forward Lukian, one for a dangerous tackle and the second for pulling down a defender as he dribbled in the Gamba penalty area.

Onose opened the scoring in the 44th minute from near the right corner of the penalty area. He crossed for Takashi Usami, who was bearing down on Jubilo keeper Krzysztof Kaminski. But Usami couldn’t get a boot to the ball or Kaminski a hand to it as it flew between them and curled inside the far post.

Usami missed a chance to put the game to bed in the 81st minute when he fired home an unhurried shot from near the penalty spot but hit the bar. Patric missed a free header in the 94th minute that also would have done the trick, and Gamba paid the price seconds later.

As Nakayama, an 82nd-minute substitute, sought to control a ball in the penalty area, he fell forward with the assistance of a defender’s hand on his back.

“It’s never easy to attack when your opponent is down a man,” Gamba head coach Tsuneyasu Miyamoto said. “We didn’t capitalize on our chances and it came down to a penalty.”

In Sunday’s other game, Shuhei Akasaki’s 92nd-minute equalizer salvaged a 1-1 draw for visiting Nagoya Grampus 12 minutes after Ryo Nagai opened the scoring for Matsumoto Yamaga.

The results left Jubilo last in J1, two points behind Matsumoto. Gamba’s draw gave them 27 points and pushed them three points clear of the relegation zone.
