Yomiuri Giants second baseman Luis Cruz has traveled to the United States to go through a checkup, believed to be on his left ankle, the Central League club announced Wednesday.

The Mexico international, who has hit .260 with six home runs and 25 RBIs in 48 games this season, was deactivated on Saturday after missing his team's interleague game a day earlier in Fukuoka against the SoftBank Hawks.

"The purpose is to decide on a course of treatment. He'll be back soon," Yomiuri general manager Tatsuyoshi Tsutsumi said.

Cruz joined the Giants after playing two seasons in the Pacific League with the Chiba Lotte Marines.
