Floor specialist Kenzo Shirai will make his first Olympic journey this summer to Rio de Janeiro as he secured his place along with Yusuke Tanaka and Koji Yamamuro on Sunday following the national apparatus championships, which serve as Japan's final qualifying event.

The trio joins six-time world and reigning Olympic champion Kohei Uchimura and another all-rounder, Ryohei Kato, in Japan's five-member men's team. Japan is aiming to win its first team gold time since the 2004 Athens Games.

Performances from the national championships in April and the NHK Cup in May were also taken into account by the Japan Gymnastics Association to choose the best possible members for the team event.

Shirai topped the floor exercise with 16.650 points on Sunday, while Tanaka ranked second in the high bar and sixth in the parallel bars for a place at his second games. Yamamuro will also appear for second time after coming second in the vault and sixth in the rings.

"I am confident, having won through the very competitive national team selection, and trustworthy experienced colleagues will be there," said the 19-year-old Shirai. "I want to compete in the team event with a goal of winning it.

"I'm the only student on the team and should the team get down, I'd like to help get us some momentum back and provide some positive spark."

Uchimura won the high bar, his only event on the day, with 15.700 points.

The shortlist of seven candidates for the women's team will also be trimmed down to five this month.
