Ozeki Kotoshogiku splashed cold water on Kisenosato's title hopes while history-chasing Hakuho dismissed Ichinojo "The Monster" to maintain his unblemished mark on the ninth day of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament on Monday.

Hakuho, who is aiming to surpass the legendary Taiho on the all-time list with his 33rd career title, improved to 9-0 to remain in the sole lead at the 15-day meet.

Harumafuji, who failed to win a title in 2014, handed relegation-threatened ozeki Goeido (4-5) his marching orders in the day's finale to sit one behind at 8-1.
