LONDON – Japan’s women improved to 2-1 on Wednesday when they defeated the Dominican Republic 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 in their Group A volleyball match at the London Olympics.
Japan was led by Yukiko Ebata, who scored 14 points, and Saori Kimura, who tallied 13. Bethania de la Cruz, who set a single-game scoring record with 42 points against Germany last year in Okayama, managed just 15 against Japan, while teammate Prisilla Altagracia Rivera had 16.
While Japan could not silence the Dominicans’ big guns, coach Masayoshi Manabu’s team was able to limit the damage with solid defending.
The straight-sets victory earned Japan three points, giving them six points from three games. Russia and Italy, who lead Group A with six points apiece from their first two matches, were to play later in the day. The top four teams in each of the two six-team groups will advance to the quarterfinal round.
