Japan women move to top of pool at World Grand Prix


Japan’s national women’s volleyball team moved to the top of the table in Pool F in the second week of the World Grand Prix on Saturday.

Yukiko Ebata was the top scorer for Japan with 12 points as the hosts defeated Puerto Rico 25-20, 25-18, 25-16. Japan is seventh in the overall standings.

A total of 16 teams are taking part in the preliminary rounds over three weeks with the top five teams over three rounds and China advancing to the finals in Ningbo, China, starting from June 27.

In earlier action at Park Arena Komaki in Aichi Prefecture, Thailand defeated the Dominican Republic 25-14, 25-22, 25-19. The victory lifted Thailand into third place in the overall standings and in a strong position to reach the finals.
