Ex-volleyball coach Yoneda dies


Former women’s national volleyball coach Kazunori Yoneda died of lung cancer on Sunday afternoon. He was 61.

After enrolling at Hosei University, the Hiroshima native was appointed coach of Hitachi Ltd.’s corporate league team in 1973.

He served as the right-hand man under the late head coach Shigeo Yamada, helping him steer the Japanese women to a gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

As head coach, Yoneda led Japan to a bronze at the Los Angeles Games in 1984 and fifth at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, featuring playmaker Motoko Obayashi. He posted a 204-108 won-loss record over his career.
