FIFA Women's World Player of the Year Homare Sawa has injured her right calf while training in Spain with her Nadeshiko League team INAC Kobe Leonessa, a team spokesperson said on Saturday.

Women's national team captain Sawa complained of discomfort in a pre-match practice session before Kobe drew 1-1 with the Barcelona women's team in a friendly on Thursday. She was substituted after the first half of the game.

Sawa will possibly undergo an examination at a hospital after returning to Japan next Wednesday, but the spokesperson suggested that she will be able to take part in a training camp for the national team beginning two days later in Wakayama Prefecture.

Sawa helped steer Japan to victory at last summer's Women's World Cup in Germany and won both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards as the tournament's top scorer and best player.
