First-place Hawks stop Eagles’ winning streak


Yuichi Honda singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning as the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks ended the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles’ winning streak at seven games with a 2-1 victory on Sunday.

Honda’s two-out single to left off Hiroshi Katayama scored pinch-runner Ryuma Kidokoro from second base at Kleenex Stadium.

The speedy second baseman also stole two bases in the game to raise his baseball-leading total to 44.

Brian Falkenborg got in and out of a two-on jam in the bottom of the 10th for his 16th save.

Masahiko Morifuku (4-0) worked two scoreless innings in relief of Tadashi Settsu. Darrell Rasner (3-4) took the loss.

Seiichi Uchikawa gave Softbank a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the third. Kazuo Matsui hit his eighth home run of the season leading off the sixth.

At Osaka Dome, Naotaka Takehara, Aarom Baldiris and Lee Seung Yeop homered to lead the Buffaloes to the win.

At Seibu Dome, Fumiya Nishiguchi pitched his first shutout in six years, leading Seibu over Hokkaido Nippon Ham.

Nishiguchi (6-6) scattered three hits and struck out 10 without a walk. Hiroyuki Nakajima followed a sixth-inning leadoff triple by Takuya Hara with a sacrifice fly off Brian Wolfe (11-6).

At Yokohama Stadium, Soma Yamauchi (2-1) pitched 6⅓ innings of one-run ball as Chunichi beat Yokohama for its third straight victory.

At Nishinomiya’s Koshien Stadium, Randy Messenger and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as Hanshin edged first-place Tokyo Yakult in a tight contest.

At Hiroshima’s Mazda Stadium, Hayato Sakamoto hit a tiebreaking two-run triple in the top of the 10th inning as Yomiuri outlasted Hiroshima.
