GUANGZHOU, China (Kyodo) Japan beat Malaysia 2-0 on Wednesday to advance to the knockout stage of the men’s soccer tournament at the Asian Games.

Goals in each half from Kensuke Nagai and Hotaru Yamaguchi made it two wins out of two after Monday’s opening 3-0 victory over host China in Group A, putting Takashi Sekizuka’s Under-21s into the round of 16.

Nagai netted on 26 minutes for his second goal of the tournament after Malaysia had failed to clear their lines and the Fukuoka University striker then picked out Yamaguchi to seal victory with a stooping header midway through the second period.
