Ishikawa off to solid start in Fujisankei Classic

FUJIKAWAGUCHIKO, Yamanashi Pref. Ryo Ishikawa fired a 5-under 66 to take a one shot lead in the first round in his bid to defend the title at the Fujisankei Classic on Thursday.

The 2009 money leader had an eagle, six birdies, a bogey and a double bogey at Fujizakura Country Club.

Teeing off on the back nine, Ishikawa birdied the 11th and eagled the 15th before birdies on the 16th and 17th holes and picked up three more shots after the turn, his only miscues coming with a bogey on the fifth and double bogey on the seventh.

Kiyoshi Murota and Shinichi Yokota were among a quartet tied for second while three players, including Shigeru Nonaka, were another stroke back in a share of sixth.

Yuta Ikeda shot even par and was in a tie for 29th, while last week’s Vana H Cup winner Hideto Tanihara and Shingo Katayama had 72s to sit in a group at 1-over.

Kaname picked KYODO Yokoo Kaname will take the place of Toru Taniguchi at the upcoming Hyundai Capital Invitational team event against South Korea, the Japan Golf Tour Organization said Thursday.

Taniguchi will miss the Sept. 10-12 meet as his wife is scheduled to give birth.

Ryo Ishikawa and Yuta Ikeda will feature among eight players who were named to the team in June based on prize money they earned last season. Two others were chosen to play by captain Isao Aoki in July.
