YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) Beijing Olympic champion Zhang Yining defeated defending champion Guo Yue 4-2 in the women’s singles final, and top-seeded Wang Hao overpowered Wang Liqin 4-0 in another all Chinese affair to take the men’s gold medal at the World Table Tennis Championships on Tuesday.
Top-seeded Zhang battled from two sets down to beat second-seeded Guo 10-12, 3-11, 11-2, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9 at Yokohama Arena to win her first world title since 2005 and second overall.
“I am pleased to follow on from my victory at the Olympics by winning here,” said Zhang. “I am not thinking about any long-term objectives and just want to produce good results in each match as it comes.”
Wang Liqin beat Olympic champion Ma Lin in Monday’s semifinals but saw his bid for a third consecutive world title wrecked as Wang Hao romped to an 11-9, 13-11, 11-5, 11-9 victory.
