Injury-hit Kei Nishikori will sit out next month’s third-round zonal Davis Cup meeting against Uzbekistan, while Tatsuma Ito has made the squad for the first time, the Japan Tennis Association said on Tuesday.
Nishikori is sidelined with an injured right elbow, and Go Soeda will also not compete at the May 8-10 event in Namangan, Uzbekistan, citing health problems.
Nishikori competed in the second round of the Davis Cup in Japan’s rout of China in March but has been focused on rehabilitating his elbow since.
Japan’s four-member squad, which will include Ito, Yuichi Sugita, Satoshi Iwabuchi and Takao Suzuki, will compete in the third round of Asia/Oceania Group 1 as it aims to advance to the World Group promotion/relegation playoff.
