TAMPA BAY, Fla. (Kyodo) Teenage sensation Ryo Ishikawa got off to a solid start Thursday, shooting 2-under-par 69 in the first round of the Transitions Championship in Florida.

Ishikawa made three birdies against one bogey to move into a share 15th place four strokes off the leader in his second tournament on the U.S. PGA circuit.

The popular 17-year-old had consecutive birdies to open the round and was at 3 under after picking up another shot on the 11th hole before hitting a bogey on the 17th at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club. Jim Furyk shot 6 under to move into first on the leaderboard followed by Stephen Ames one stroke behind.

“This was a really great round since I only had one bogey. Compared with my first tournament on the U.S. PGA tour I think have gotten used to playing here,” said Ishikawa.

“Even though my swing and reading the course of the ball was difficult it is strange that I was able to have such a good score.”
