HARBIN, China (Kyodo) Mizue Hoshi won the title in the women's giant slalom Tuesday as Japan lifted its gold medal haul to five at the Winter University Games.

Hoshi clocked 2 minutes, 18.20 seconds to finish ahead of Anne-Sophie Barthet of France and Poland's Katarzyna Karasinska, who timed 2:18.65 and 2:18.68, respectively, for second and third.

Koichiro Sato, meanwhile, led a 1-2 finish for Japan after springing out of 14th place in the 10-km cross country leg with a huge performance in the ski jumping to claim the mass start Nordic combined title with a total of 227.7 points.

Takehiro Nagai was second with 224.9, followed by Petr Kutal of the Czech Republic in third on 223.4.
