MELBOURNE, Australia – Akiko Morigami joined compatriot Ai Sugiyama in the second round of the women’s singles after a straight sets defeat of Michaella Krajicek at the Australian Open on Tuesday.
World No. 49 Morigami broke her 33rd-ranked Dutch opponent three times in an aggressive first set before going on to comfortably book her place in the second round for the second year running with a 6-2, 6-2 win at Melbourne Park.
“I was able to play my own tennis,” said Morigami. “I knew that my opponent had an injured left wrist and I could see my game through according to plan. I have come into this tournament in good condition and this (win) has given me confidence.
“Hopefully I can stay in the competition until at least the last 16,” she said.
Sugiyama advanced to the second round after Vera Zvonareva of Russia retired during the second set of their first-round match on Monday with Sugiyama leading 6-3, 1-1.
