Fukuoka grabs Brazilian Open title


Japan’s Haruna Fukuoka came back from two games down and beat Nicoletta Stefanova of Italy 4-2 in the final to claim the Brazilian Open women’s singles title on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Fukuoka won 8-11, 7-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-6, 11-7 to become the first Japanese to win a singles event on the International Table Tennis Federation Pro Tour since July 2002, when Aya Umemura won the same Brazilian Open. Japanese compatriot Hiroko Fujii was a semifinalist, losing to Stefanova 12-10, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8.
