Nakamura beat South Korean Lee Du Haeng by the narrowest of margins in a race that only three runners competed in but Japan have a meager return of just three gold medals after four days of the nine-day games, two of them coming in a non-Olympic event.

"All I knew was that I had to get the gold," said Nakamura, whose win in a time of 31 minutes, 59.69 seconds was followed by another gold medal for Japan in the women's soft tennis event.
