Makoto Sasamoto was knocked out of the Greco-Roman 60-kg class with a quarterfinal defeat Sunday as Japan ended its campaign at the world championships without a podium finish in any of the men's weight categories.

Sasamoto, who finished fifth at the Athens Olympics, went down 2-0 to Eusebiu Diaconu of Romania and failed to gain a spot in the repechage rounds.

Bulgaria's Armen Nazarian won his third straight world title in the division.
