Hisayoshi Sato became the first Japanese to swim under 50 seconds in the men's 100-meter freestyle Friday when he set a national record of 49.73 at the national collegiate championships. Sato set the new mark as the first swimmer of the Nihon University 4 x 100-meter relay team at Namihaya Dome, breaking the previous mark of 50.07 set by Daisuke Hosokawa at the world championships in Montreal in July. "I went aggressive from the start but I also tried to relax while swimming," Sato said.
