Hosei University freshman Katsunori Sato won the men’s 10,000 meters with a personal-best time for his first victory in the Asama invitational meet in on Saturday.

The 19-year-old Sato beat the veterans at Asama Onsen International Skate Center by clocking 14 minutes, 22.53 seconds, while Toshihiko Itokawa, a national team member at the Salt Lake City Olympics, came home second in 14:34.13. In the women’s 5,000 meters, high school student Eri Natori took the top honors with a time of 8:05.79 with Erika Oki following in second at 8:09.38.
