Japan's Hiroshi Izumi of Meiji University beat Diego Barreto of Brazil in the men's 90-kg judo final on Tuesday to win the gold medal at the World University Games.

Izumi, who received a bye into the second round, beat three of his four opponents in the Aug.

20-31 summer competition by a "yusei" decision and capped the feat with a victory over Barreto of Unimonte University in the evening match at Keimyung College Sports Stadium.

Elsewhere, Kiyoteru Higuchi, the only Japanese to take part in taekwondo event, was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the men's featherweight 67-kg class after a loss to Ruford Hamon of the U.S.
