Japan will set up a consulate general in Denpasar, Indonesia, on Jan. 1 and close two consulates general, in Anchorage, Alaska, and Porto Alegre, Brazil, government officials said Wednesday.
More than 360,000 Japanese visitors travel to Bali each year, and the number of Japanese residents on the resort island has been rising sharply in recent years, officials said. Denpasar is the capital of Bali.
Japanese consular officials in Seattle will travel to Anchorage as needed to handle consular affairs in Alaska, while consular officials from Curitiba will visit Porto Alegre to handle consular affairs there.
