A limit should be imposed on the number of terms a governor can serve, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said Tuesday.
Koizumi, who is also president of the Liberal Democratic Party, was asked to comment on an earlier remark by LDP Secretary General Tstutomu Takebe.
Takebe told reporters Monday that the party would not give the green light to any LDP-affiliated governor who seeks to run for a fourth term.
"As a rule, in the United States the president or a governor cannot run for a third term," Koizumi told reporters at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. "I think that adverse effects can result from a long-term" administration.
