Senior officials of the Kanagawa Prefectural Police Department will be subject to pay cuts and other disciplinary measures for failing to properly supervise their ranks and report a series of wrongdoings committed by them, the National Public Safety Commission announced Thursday.

The formal announcement came after the punishments were authorized during the day's meeting of the National Public Safety Commission.

Kanagawa police head Takeo Miyama received a one-month pay cut of 20 percent, while Eiji Nakabayashi, the personnel and training bureau chief, received a 10 percent cut and Chief Inspector Kazuo Morisada a 5 percent cut.

Yoshimasa Hara, head of the consumer and environmental protection division, was reprimanded with a warning from the director general of the National Police Agency.

The misdeeds committed by Kanagawa officers include an assault on a train conductor and the attempted extortion of sexual favors from a young woman using police evidence. Police allegedly tried to cover up both incidents.

The NPA decided to take quick disciplinary action to regain public trust in the force, NPA sources said.
