Club Pure in Shibuya will be celebrating its first anniversary Aug. 28. Partners Matt Naiman, Steven Saxanoff and Blake Showalter began their Pure party plan in Yokohama six years ago with their trademark policy of charging an affordable flat fee for all-you-can-drink on the weekends.

All-you-can-drink cover charges used to be common practice in Tokyo during the days of disco and the partners have hit on a winner by reviving the practice. Both the Yokohama and Shibuya clubs are thriving and there are even rumors that the three will open a new and bigger (500 capacity) venue in Tokyo later this year. When you consider that most places charge between 2 yen,000-3,000 yen just to get, perhaps including one drink ticket, it is easy to see the appeal of the Pure party plan (see prices below).

An endless lineup of young, up-and-coming DJs will also ply you with hip-hop and R&B all night. Sounds like a party to me.

Club Pure Shibuya, 3F Chitose Bldg. 32-7 Udagawa-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, (03) 3477-7077

Prices (for all you can drink all night): Thursday: first 50 people: 1,000 yen; Friday: women 2,000 yen, men 2,500 yen; Saturday: women 2,500 yen, men 3,000 yen.

Tripster Far-East Adventure Tour

A couple of years ago I reviewed a hideaway beach bar and club in Tsujido called Sputnik, a seasonal hangout that opened in the summer and featured DJ events and a skate ramp. This year, instead of opening at its usual spot, the owners bought an old doubledecker bus and equipped it with a pumped-up sound system. Under the banner of "Tripster Far-East Adventure Tour," it toured music festivals (including Fuji Rock) and various cities around Japan.

"The second floor is set up with a fully equipped DJ booth and the sound system," says Kunichi Nomura, one of the organizers. "The first floor is basically our home."

At each spot, they have been hosting a DJ party, for which they have been bringing DJs in from Tokyo and also recruiting local acts from each city where they've stopped.

There are still two weeks left for the Tripsters, with a party this weekend in Miyazaki and another next weekend in Nago City, Okinawa. For the exact locations, check the Tripster Web site ( www.tripsters.net ) where a map is posted one week before each event. Entry is free. All you have to do is find the bus.
