Things to do / Traditional festivals

In Minamiuonuma, Niigata Prefecture, winter winds aren't the only way to feel a chill. Each weekend from Jan. 31 to Feb. 23, the city will hold a festival called Setsubidosai in Zenibuchi Park where there will be performances by traditional Japanese drummers as well as women dressed as yuki onna (female snow spirits) in kimono who will pose for photos with visitors.

The event will also have cozy kamakura (snow huts) with irori (open hearths) installed inside so you can warm up and fill your stomach with grilled mochi (rice cakes) and hearty bowls of mushroom soup.(Yuki Yamauchi)

Schedules may change due to a lack of snow.

In line with COVID-19 guidelines, the government is strongly requesting that residents and visitors exercise caution if they choose to visit bars, restaurants, music venues and other public spaces.
