"Itooshiki – Boku no Jidai” (“Precious – My Own Time”) is a new musical written and directed by Taiki Nishikawa, a young dramatist, tap dancer and in-demand musicals actor whose credits include “Miss Saigon” and “Les Miserables.”
Performed by a 17-strong cast he chose in open auditions from 400 candidates, Nishikawa’s high-energy fantasy-with-meaning follows a salaryman who turns a corner one day on his commute to work and finds himself in a magical world. There, with old pop hits playing and clips from movie legends Akira Kurosawa and Yasujiro Ozu showing, the bored office worker remembers the dreams of his youth when he wanted to be an entertainer. Then nothing can be the same again ...
Also involved in staging "Itooshiki – Boku no Jidai” is the actor and director Darren Yap, who Nishikawa met in 2012 when the Australian was associate director of the Japanese version of “Miss Saigon.” This time he brings his experience to bear as supervising director, while the award-winning modern jazz pianist Ai Kuwabara is in charge of the music.
