Kumamoto Castle Autumn Festival

Kumamoto Castle, a historic symbol of the prefecture, had to go through a period of reconstruction after earthquakes in 2016 jolted Kumamoto Prefecture and its surroundings.

But, for the first time in three years, the main tower's closure to the public will be partly lifted on Oct. 5 to coincide with the Kumamoto Castle Autumn Festival, a celebration that will bring many performers to Ninomaru Park on the castle grounds.

There will be performances of traditional local dances on Oct. 5 and 6, as well as takigi (firelight) noh on Oct. 13, wadaiko (Japanese drums) on the following day and other seasonal activities. (Yuki Yamauchi)
