Each year, Sendai, the largest city in the Tohoku region, holds three major festivals, one of which is the Sendai Aoba Matsuri. This event's roots can be traced back to 1655, and this year's celebration expects around 900,000 visitors.
The festivities will start on Saturday with entertainers performing a suzume odori (sparrow dance), a jaunty traditional dance unique to the area.
The event livens up on Sunday with a parade of mikoshi (portable shrines), yamaboko (floats) and people in historical costumes. In addition, musketeers will fire a salute in celebration of the Reiwa Era. (Yuki Yamauchi)
