For the second time since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the town of Namie in Fukushima Prefecture will hold its annual Anba Matsuri at the former site of Kusano Shrine. The return of the festival to its normal location marks the community's hope that it will help revitalize the area affected by the 2011 disaster.
The event will open with a Shinto ritual followed by gagaku (court music) and kagura (Shinto dance) performances. The festival will finish with a flourish as dancers in colorful outfits demonstrate their prowess in taue odori, a rice-planting dance. (Yuki Yamauchi)
