A U.S. court ruling that invalidates most tariffs put into place by President Donald Trump this year was greeted in Japan with muted optimism, as the decision, although much expected and not immediately effective, confirms the possibility that the brutal duties could eventually be lifted.
An analyst in Tokyo noted shortly after the decision that court rulings will likely be one of the factors in ending Trump tariffs — possibly this year — while a Japanese official recognized the potential significance of legal challenges in the United States.
"If a ruling were to be finalized in the future, I do think it would inevitably have a certain impact," Ryosei Akazawa, Japan’s chief tariff negotiator, said on Tuesday morning.
