Chrome Hearts, Giraffe and Eley Kishimoto
Charmed, I'm sure Silver-accessories brand Chrome Hearts launched its Aoyama shop nine years ago, but has recently reopened its doors after a renewal that's given it a fresh charm — one that's much more than just something dangly for your bracelet.

Rwandan troupe investigates societies' failures
I n 1994, Hutu militias began the systematic genocide of the Tutsi people of Rwanda. In just 100 days, an estimated 1 million people had been butchered and whole families, villages and towns destroyed. Once Tutsi rebels regrouped and took control of the unstable country, many of the Hutus responsible fled into Democratic Republic of Congo, where they continue to wreak havoc among local villages.

Plenty of promise here for the boys
Although Japan Fashion Week doesn't exactly overload on men's fashion, with only a handful of quality designers showing this season, the outlook from the '08-'09 Autumn / Winter Collection is generally positive.

Three works cast a magic spell
The Tokyo International Arts Festival (TIF) this year presents an eclectic and fascinating program of dance and theater from Argentina, Switzerland and Belgium. Having admitting that the festival — in its current form since 2002 — is under financial constraints due to lack of arts funding and a flawed subsidy system, the organizers deserve credit for producing such a strong and diverse schedule.

Harajuku's "Style Deficit Disorder," model Irina Lazareanu gets wicked and more
Cure for disorder The popular fashion hub Harajuku is the subject of a fascinating new book by Tokyo-based editor and creative consultant Tiffany Godoy. Rich in detail and accompanied by some remarkable images, her book, "Style Deficit Disorder" (Chronicle Books), documents the history of the area from World War II until the present day, tracking its continuing fluctuations.

For butoh artist's 101st birthday, a month of dance
The Japanese avant-garde dance of butoh (the dance of darkness) is often misunderstood. Labeled as abstruse and indefinable by critics, it could be considered an acquired taste. Created in post-World War II Japan by Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno, the art form is for some, though, a mesmerizing experience. Through rigorous preparation and meditation, many dancers even say they experience a kind of artistic trance.

Japan's top fashion talents
I couldn't quite put my finger on what it reminded me of. Then I got home after the show and switched on my TV, and there it was in front of my eyes. It was one of those programs where toddlers dance around and sing with the help of a guy in Spandex pants. Yeah! Bingo! That's what the mercibeaucoup fashion show reminded me of!
