Collaborations, crossovers and synergy between different art forms have been a prevalent force in the art world of late. Curators in Japan have been quick to tap into this movement as is shown by recent exhibitions such as "Skin and Bones" at the National Art Center and the current show at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, "Space for Your Future." The latest addition to this trend is "Art x Dance." An impressive list of artists and dancers are participating in the program of exhibitions, installations, performances and discussions.
Local prize-winning painter Asae Soya [whose solo exhibition is featured above], American minimalist Shingo Francis, optical maverick Norihisa Hashimoto and former Nederlands Dans Theater member Megumi Nakamura are the pick of the bunch in this eclectic showcase. Francis is known for monochrome canvases and focuses on the relationship between space and light. Hashimoto's spherical photograph work has an academic and scientific edge to it and complements the structure and form of dancers such as Nakamura, whose acclaimed performance in Jiri Kylian's "Blackbird" ballet adds to her glowing reputation.
