Kento Momota, the former world No. 2 serving an indefinite ban from badminton for betting at casinos in Japan, is expected to take part in a charity event this weekend, sources said Monday.

The 22-year-old Momota is scheduled to attend an event in Kumamoto Prefecture sponsored by his employer NTT East, to benefit the victims of the earthquake there in April.

Momota is not expected to play at the function, but will participate as a speaker.

Once a strong contender to win a medal at the Rio Olympics, Momota was suspended in April when it came to light that he frequented casinos, which are illegal in Japan.

The Nippon Badminton Association has said his suspension could be lifted after a period of good behavior.
