A farewell ceremony for sumo great Chiyonofuji, who died Sunday, will take place Oct. 1 at the entrance area of Ryogoku Kokugikan, Japan Sumo Association public relations chief Kasugano said Tuesday.

The event will be organized by the Kokonoe Stable Supporters' Organization, according to Kasugano, the former sekiwake Tochinowaka.

The wake on Saturday and the funeral and memorial service on Sunday will be held at the Kokonoe stable in Tokyo's Sumida Ward, involving only the bereaved family and those who were close to the former yokozuna and 31-time champion.

Chiyonofuji, who later became stablemaster Kokonoe, died of pancreatic cancer at a Tokyo hospital at age 61.
