The Grand Rapids Drive have hired Rex Walters as their new coach, the Detroit Pistons announced on Wednesday.

The Drive are the Pistons' D-League affiliate.

Walters, a Japanese-American, starred at the University of Kansas before a seven-season career as an NBA guard. He coached the University of San Francisco (2008-16) after leading Florida Atlantic (2006-08). For the 2013-14 season, he was named the West Coast Conference's Coach of the Year. He had a 126-125 record during his eight seasons at USF.

"Rex Walters brings a wealth of basketball knowledge and experience and has a passion for developing young players," Pistons coach and president Stan Van Gundy said. "He's spent some time with us here and already has a good understanding of how we operate."
