Three-time Olympic men's 60-kg judo champion Tadahiro Nomura announced Monday that he is finally retiring.

The 40-year-old Nomura will call it a career after the All-Japan Businessmen's Individual Championship to be held on Saturday. He will hold a press conference Aug. 31.

Renowned for his seoinage shoulder throw, Nomura won three consecutive gold medals starting with the 1996 Atlanta Games, then Sydney and Athens. He is the only Japanese Olympian to have won three straight golds in an individual event.

Nomura was not selected for the last two Olympics in Beijing and London because of injuries.
