Otake improves to 10-10 in strong outing against Giants


Kan Otake threw seven shutout innings en route to notching double-digit wins for the second year in a row in the Hiroshima Carp’s 4-0 blanking of the Yomiuri Giants on Sunday.

Otake (10-10) struck out five and walked one. Yuki Koyama (0-1) allowed two runs in six innings in taking the loss for the Central League-winning Giants.

Kila Ka’aihue put his team on the scoreboard with a two-run single in the first inning at Tokyo Dome. Yoshiyuki Ishihara and Takahiro Iwamoto added RBI singles in the ninth.

At Nagoya Dome, Yohei Oshima hit a tiebreaking, two-run single with two outs in the eighth inning as Chunichi sent second-place Hanshin to its fourth loss in a row.

Randy Messenger (12-8) yielded four runs and nine hits in eight innings.

Swallows 4, BayStars 2

At Tokyo’s Jingu Stadium, rookie Yasuhiro Ogawa (16-4) limited the damage to two runs in six innings and took over the league lead in wins as Tokyo Yakult held off Yokohama. The right-hander struck out five and walked two. Wladimir Balentien was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.


Fighters 11, Buffaloes 6

At Osaka’s Kyocera Dome, Shota Ono opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the second inning, Michel Abreu homered twice with four RBIs in a 4-for-5 outing, and last-place Hokkaido Nippon Ham routed Orix.

Yoshio Itoi had a three-run clout against his former team in a five-run seventh but Orix’s rally was too late.

Lions 6, Marines 5, 10 innings

At Seibu Dome, Lions captain Takumi Kuriyama singled to open the home half of the 10th and Masato Kumashiro, who entered as pinch runner before playing right, decided it with an RBI single off Naoya Masuda (2-6) the same frame.

Hawks 5, Eagles 0

At Fukuoka’s Yafuoku Dome, rookie right-hander Nao Higashihama (2-1) pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings, Yuki Yanagita homered in a 3-for-4 outing, and third-place Fukuoka Softbank sent Tohoku Rakuten to its second shutout defeat in a row since clinching the PL title last Thursday.
