Kosei Inoue has been named as coach of the Japan men's judo team, the All Japan Judo Federation announced Monday, while Ryuji Sonoda has been kept on as women's coach.

Inoue, the 100-kg gold medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, replaces Shinichi Shinohara, whose squad failed to win a single gold medal at this summer's London Olympics. It was the first time Japan's men had ever suffered that indignity.

The 34-year-old Inoue served as the captain of the Japan team to the 2004 Athens Games. He retired from competition in 2008.
