Minobe places second in World Cup

Gymnast Yu Minobe overcame a slow start to finish second in the women’s all-around event at the World Cup Tokyo meet on Saturday.

Minobe, the only competitor from the host country in a field of seven, collected a total of 54.699 points at Ryogoku Kokugikan, 3.566 behind China’s Huang Qiushuang, who captured the 2011 overall World Cup title.

Minobe was in sixth place after the first two apparatus, vault and uneven bars, but she bounced back with the second-highest score on balance beam and a solid floor exercise routine.

“I was disappointed after a mistake on the uneven bars,” Minobe said. “But I just moved on without giving up, and I was able to perform in a good atmosphere here.”

Three-time world all-around champion Kohei Uchimura is scheduled to perform Sunday in the men’s competition.
