Volleyball events to stay in Japan

The men’s and women’s volleyball World Cups, which double as qualifiers for next year’s London Olympics, will go ahead in Japan as scheduled in November and December.

Final confirmation that the tournaments would take place was made Saturday during a meeting between the International Volleyball Federation and the Japan Volleyball Association.

Japan’s hosting of the tournament had been thrown into doubt following the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami that triggered a nuclear crisis which is still ongoing.

Sendai, which took the brunt of the earthquake and tsunami, had been scheduled to host some of the World Cup games but its place will be taken by a venue in western Japan.
