Kitajima rebounds for 200 victory

Double Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima rebounded to win the 200 meters breaststroke Sunday at the Japan Open, a warmup meet for the world championships in Shanghai in July.

Kitajima, who was beaten in the 100 by Ryo Tateishi on Friday, touched the wall in 2 minutes, 11.43 seconds ahead of Kazuki Otsuka (2:11.52) and Akihiro Yamaguchi (2:12.54) on the final day of the meet at Namihaya Dome.

Kitajima is feeling his way back having been sidelined for a chunk of last month after straining a groin-area muscle in his left leg at the start of the 200 at the national championships.

In other events, 14-year-old Kanako Watanabe added the women’s 200 breaststroke to her victories in the 50 and 100, coming home in 2:23.90.
