The Japan High School Baseball Federation decided Friday to go ahead with the National High School Invitational Tournament as scheduled for March 23-April 3.

Last week's devastating earthquake in northeastern Japan had put the holding of the traditional baseball event in question.

The federation made the decision to realize high school players' dreams of playing at Koshien Stadium and encourage the people in the quake-hit areas after examining various opinions, including calls for a cancellation.

Since its inaugural edition in 1924, the tournament has been staged every spring, excluding the years between 1942 and 1946 because of World War II.
